This content presents the implementation and operational benefits of advanced online nutrient monitoring systems for enhanced Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) process control in wastewater treatment facilities. At the Hernando County Water Reclamation Facility, a plant-wide monitoring solution was deployed following a Phase 3 expansion to support stringent total nitrogen limits of ≤3 mg/L. The system integrated real-time monitoring of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and UV absorbance across multiple process locations using a Process Sample Sequencer and automated filtration technology. Continuous multi-point data collection enabled rapid identification of operational issues, reduced dependence on manual laboratory sampling, and improved process optimization during startup and ongoing operation.
The project also evaluates the effectiveness of Ammonia-Based Aeration Control (ABAC) using online colorimetric analysis in comparison to traditional ion selective electrode (ISE) systems. Case studies from facilities in Roseville, Loudoun Water, and Denver demonstrate that modern colorimetric analyzers provide improved low-range ammonia accuracy, reliable operation in high-solids environments, and reduced maintenance requirements. Economic analysis showed potential energy savings of 11–18%, annual operational savings of approximately $173,000, and return on investment within two years. The findings highlight that continuous nutrient visibility and robust analyzer filtration systems significantly improve wastewater process control, operational reliability, and overall treatment efficiency.
